In a bold move aimed at reshaping societal views, Jamat e Islami Hind has declared its mission to positively influence public opinion regarding Muslims and Islam over the next four years.
This initiative comes in the wake of a growing concern about the negative narratives that are being propagated against the Indian muslim community.
As per the editorial column of the magazine zindagi e nau’s August edition, Jamat will be active in designing its activities & programs in a manner which is most suited to stir a positive change in the public opinion.
Ameer e Jamat e islami, Hind Syed Sadatullah Hussaini emphasised, in the editorial column, that while many believe political change alone could resolve the issues faced by Muslims, the truth is that only confronting and altering public sentiment is pivotal to everything else and added that the endeavour required immense courage and determination inviting people to take steps towards this endeavour. He underlined that this task demands the highest degree of courage, wisdom and patience, absence of which will turn out to be a sticking point.
Underlining the significance of this endeavor, Hussaini challenged the superficial belief that mere political change would serve as a decisive turning point for Muslims. He articulated that in a democratic society, public opinion shapes every facet of human life. Confronting and challenging prevailing public sentiments, therefore, is the only way forward.
As far as our country is concerned, the perception of Muslims is influenced by a tangled web of factors, including not only the actions of divisive groups but also shortcomings within the Muslim community itself. These Communal forces, matter of factly, have indeed used these factors against Muslims and amplificated them, in view of the propaganda. Therefore, the problem doesn't solely lie in the demonization, peddled by the Communal forces but in our very shortcomings.
To effectively combat negative stereotypes, Hussaini identified four key factors that contribute to the prevailing public opinion about Muslims:
1. Historical Narratives: The portrayal of history significantly shapes contemporary views. Misunderstandings rooted in the past continue to affect how Muslims are perceived today.
2. Terrorism and Media Sensationalism : The pervasive narrative equating Muslims with terrorism, often amplified by sensationalist media coverage, distorts reality and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. The media’s tendency to conflate isolated incidents with broader truths exacerbates this issue.
3. Socio-Economic and Educational Disparities : The socio-economic challenges faced by the Muslim community foster perceptions of them as “liabilities” rather than “assets”. This narrative not only fuels stereotypes but also affects opportunities for collaboration and integration.
4. Alienation from Other Communities: A sense of disconnection between Muslims and other societal groups deepens misunderstandings and prejudice, creating a chasm that hinders mutual understanding and respect.
Addressing these four factors is crucial for fostering a more positive public perception.
The Challenge of Post-Truth Politics
Hussaini highlighted the alarming trend of post-truth politics, where emotional appeals, misinformation, and sensationalism overshadow facts and rational discourse. This phenomenon poses a significant challenge for those advocating for truth and justice, making it imperative to navigate this complex landscape thoughtfully.
The post truth phenomenon characterises the dilapidated situation of the democratic societies of the 21st century and this is in this situation that we need to steer a way forward. The speaker then moved towards presenting a solution to the concerned problem.
1. Attention towards Leaders of Opinion Making: The importance of recognizing and collaborating with influential figures in shaping public discourse cannot be overstated. Leaders in various fields—be it academia, politics, or social activism—have the power to influence perceptions. Therefore, engaging with these leaders through serious research and academic initiatives is crucial. By fostering a network of informed individuals who can advocate for positive narratives around Islam and Muslims, we can create a ripple effect that enhances public understanding and acceptance.
2. Strategic Use of Mass Media: In today’s digital age, mass media serves as one of the most powerful tools for shaping public opinion. The strategic use of various media platforms—print, broadcast, and digital—can facilitate the dissemination of positive stories, achievements, and narratives that counteract prevailing stereotypes. This requires a proactive approach in creating content that is engaging, informative, and relatable, thus ensuring that the portrayal of Muslims in the media aligns more closely with reality.
3. Public Discourse and Dialogue: Encouraging open and honest dialogue within the community and with broader society is essential. Platforms for discussion should be created where various perspectives can be shared, and misconceptions can be addressed. This fosters understanding and builds bridges between communities. Public discourse also provides an opportunity to clarify misconceptions and promote the values of Islam in a manner that resonates with diverse audiences.
4. Efforts Towards Extra-Communal Assistance: Acknowledging the role of allies in changing public perception is vital. Efforts should be made to involve non-Muslims in advocating for issues that affect the Muslim community. When non-Muslim citizens raise their voices in support of Muslim concerns, it significantly alters public perception and demonstrates a collective commitment to justice and equality. This collaboration can amplify messages and encourage a more nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by Muslims.
5. Active Participation in the Public Sphere and Services: Finally, active engagement in civic life and community services is paramount. Muslims should not only participate in public discourse but also take on roles in public service, demonstrating the positive contributions of the community to society at large. By being visible and active in various sectors—be it education, healthcare, or community service—Muslims can combat stereotypes and showcase the values of cooperation, integrity, and service that Islam embodies.
These strategies collectively aim to reshape public opinion through intentional actions, creating a more favorable and accurate representation of Muslims in society.
Social Reform: A Call to Action for the Muslim Community
In today's world, mere communication and verbal advocacy are insufficient to shape public opinion. Practical examples of our values and beliefs must resonate within society. For the Muslim community, this means aligning our actions closely with Islamic teachings. One fundamental aspect of social reform involves inviting others to embrace Islam. Reforming the Muslim society is not just beneficial; it is essential. Without this transformation, positively influencing public opinion about Muslims in our country will remain a challenging task. Thus, our social reform efforts must not only be intensified but also strategically organized to effectively shift public perceptions.
However, it is vital to recognize that the deterioration of public opinion cannot be solely attributed to the behaviors of Muslims. The manipulations and provocations of sectarian forces play a substantial role in distorting public perception. While these external factors must be countered decisively, it is equally important to acknowledge that even minor lapses in our conduct can facilitate their agendas. Ultimately, we are accountable for our actions. Therefore, engaging in self-reflection and reform is crucial for fostering a better future.
The first priority should be to transform the Muslim society into a living embodiment of Islamic values. Additionally, it is important to highlight the positive attributes within the Muslim community, even amidst its current challenges. Alongside these priorities, several other critical aspects warrant attention in our social reform initiatives:
1. Addressing Social ills : Special emphasis should be placed on addressing the social issues within the Muslim community that contribute to negative public perception of Islam in the current Indian context. A significant shortcoming in previous reform efforts is their limited focus on select aspects of Islamic ethics, often neglecting other crucial ethical dimensions. For instance, the following ethical shortcomings deserve special attention due to their influence on public opinion:
2. Cleanliness and Purity : High standards of cleanliness must be upheld in neighborhoods, homes, and especially in mosques and during religious ceremonies. A commitment to cleanliness not only enhances our environments but also combats prejudice and creates a positive public impression.
3. Women’s Rights : Hussaini highlighted that a prevailing misconception exists that Islam does not treat women fairly. While external propaganda contributes to this view, certain behaviors among Muslims, influenced by local culture rather than Islamic principles, also play a role. Practices such as denying women their inheritance, neglecting their financial rights, and imposing unnecessary restrictions on their education and participation in society undermine the dignity Islam affords them. Reforming these attitudes is vital for reshaping public opinion.
4. Financial Ethics: “The ethical standards of trade and finance are foundational in Islam. Historically, the integrity of Muslim business practices has played a pivotal role in spreading Islamic values” Hussaini iterated .
Unfortunately, this distinction is diminishing. Reports suggest that, in many cases, Muslims’ behaviors in trade do not reflect the ethical values espoused by Islam. Addressing issues like deception in financial dealings and ensuring transparency can significantly improve public perception.
5. Visibility of Reform Efforts : For public opinion to shift, it is essential that the leaders and movements within the Muslim community demonstrate a commitment to these reform efforts. If the community rallies passionately against government laws like triple talaq but neglects to address arbitrary divorces or social issues like cleanliness, the shortcomings of our society become conflated with Islam itself, perpetuating negative stereotypes. It is vital to clarify Islam's stance on these issues and ensure that our reform initiatives align with Islamic principles.
In conclusion, Hussaini underlined that the path to social reform is both a challenge and an opportunity for the Muslim community. By addressing internal shortcomings, highlighting our strengths, and actively engaging in reform, we can reshape public perception and foster a more positive understanding of Islam and Muslims in society. The call to action is clear: we must embody the principles we espouse and work tirelessly to improve our collective image for the betterment of our community and society as a whole.
